Australian Federal Football League
(AFFL)

The truly national football league that Australia has never had, starting at the time of Federation in 1901. A fictional competition inspired by the pyramid structure of European football/soccer leagues.

  • The geographical history for every electorate of the House of Representatives that forms the basis for each AFFL team is courtesy of Psephos–Adam Carr's Election Archive.
  • Team names have been chosen, in general, so as not to clash with the location of any real professional teams competing at the top levels of any football code. Exceptions include where the name of an electorate pre-dates a real-life football team of the same name (eg Parramatta and Fremantle).
  • For Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, the four cities with two or more metropolitan electorates as of 1901, no teams are named directly for those cities nor with a North/South/East/West prefix (even though electorates exist with those naming conventions). Individual suburb names have been chosen instead.
  • For other cities that begin within a single electorate but grow over time to spread between two or more (eg Perth and Newcastle), the original teams carry the names of those cities and later teams are named for areas redistributed to the new electorates.
  • For regional teams with widely distributed populations beyond one or two central towns at the time of their establishment, names can be either chosen based on prominent natural features such as rivers, bays or mountains (as some electorates are, eg Moreton and Barrier), or named for their general locations within a state (eg Western Districts).
  • When electorates are abolished or the boundaries redrawn considerably, affected teams either merge or fold. One outcome is more likely than the other depending on the following criteria:
    • CriterionMergeFold
Number of neighbouring electorates that absorb the affected electorateOneTwo or more
      Location of affected electorateRegionalMetropolitan
Age of threatened team compared to potential merger partnerSimilar or olderYounger
League division of threatened team compared to potential merger partnerSimilar or higherLower

  • Merged teams can either reflect the identities of both original teams (eg Albury & Wagga Wagga) or renamed to something more regional (eg Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie form Goldfields), and assume the league ranking of the highest placing merger partner.

Legend:
= Number of First Division premierships, "2nd-3rd" = Number of second or third place finishes, "4th-6th" = Number of fourth to sixth place finishes.
"D1" = Total number of years in the First Division, "D2" = Total number of years in the Second Division, "D3" = Total number of years in the Third Division.
